Belgian Paralympian Marieke Vervoort has ended her own life through euthanasia at the age of 40. Vervoort, who won gold and silver at the London 2012 Paralympics, and two further medals at Rio 2016, had an incurable degenerative muscle disease.
The New Zealand Parliament has passed a bill legalising voluntary euthanasia in a historic vote, and turned the final decision on assisted dying over to the public. It will now go to a public referendum alongside next year’s general election for a final test.

A couple from New York is suing a fertility clinic after a woman gave birth to other couples’ babies because of an IVF mixup, according to a federal lawsuit filed in US District Court.The mother, who is Asian, gave birth to two non-Asian babies, and each child was a genetic match to a different couple that was also a client at the fertility clinic, the lawsuit states. The Asian couple was then forced to give up the babies to their true genetic parents.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), reluctance or refusal to vaccinate is now one of the top ten major threats to global health. Even people in high-income countries, with good healthcare systems, are dying from easily preventable diseases. „It’s a tragedy for Europe that a child or an adult has died because of a preventable disease,“ says Patrick O’Connor, a team lead in WHO Europe’s Vaccine-Preventable Diseases and Immunization program. „We owe it to them to protect them.“
