The aim of this multi-author, multinational book is to provide a source of information about the forensic aspects of medicine and related fields for those currently involved in the clinical and pathologic aspects of health care, forensic assessment, investigation and diagnosis for victims, assailants and others involved in police or judicial systems, whether full-time or part-time. Each chapter has been written by acknowledged specialists within the particular held. 1 he chapters included represent those areas in which either new work or new understanding is available, and those areas which have been emphasized or highlighted by world events in the last decade or so.
The overlap between the pathologic and clinical aspects of forensic medicine has grown. Many forensic pathologists undertake work involved in the clinical aspects of medicine, and increasingly forensic physicians become involved in death investigation. The forensic medical aspects of work must be underpinned by a sound knowledge of forensic science, forensic toxicology, and other specialties such as forensic anthropology and forensic odontology. forensic work is now truly multiprofessional, and an awareness of what other specialisms can contribute is an essential part of basic forensic education, work, and continuing professional development.
Those involved in the academic aspects of forensic medicine and related specialties will be aware of the paucity of funding for research. In many countries, low levels of funding are reinforced by lack of personnel to undertake even day-to-day service work. This is a sad contrast to more mainstream specialties, whose research and development is underpinned and supported by the pharmaceutical industry. Despite this, as this volume shows, forensic medicine continues to develop - though perhaps not at the rate which some of us might like — in order to support and enhance judicial systems in the proper, safe and impartial dispensation of justice. A worldwide upsurge in the need for and appropriate implementation of human rights policies is one of the drivers for this development, and it is to be hoped that responsible governments and other world bodies will continue to raise the profile of, invest in, and recognize the necessity for independent, impartial skilled practitioners of forensic medicine, both pathological and clinical, in today's society. We hope that this book will assist and reinforce this approach and we welcome feedback from readers.

Anotacija:
This book offers a comprehensive road map for determining when and how to regulate risky reproductive technologies on behalf of future children. First, it provides three benchmarks for determining whether a reproductive practice is harmful to the children it produces. This framework synthesizes and extends past efforts to make sense of our intuitive, but paradoxical, belief that reproductive choices can be both life-giving and harmful. Next, it recommends a process for
reconciling the interests of future children with the reproductive liberty of prospective parents. The author rejects a blanket preference for either parental autonomy or child welfare and proposes instead a case-by-case inquiry that takes into account the nature and magnitude of the proposed restrictions on procreative liberty, the risk of harm to future children, and the context in which the issue arises.
Finally, he applies this framework to four past and future medical treatments with above average risk, including cloning and genetic engineering. Drawing lessons from these case studies, Peters criticizes the current lack of regulatory oversight and recommends both more extensive pre-market testing and closer post-market monitoring of new reproductive technologies. His moderate, pragmatic approach will be widely appreciated.

"These essays are distinguished examples of analytical philosophy: clear, highly intelligent, and scrupulously argued. The presentation is forceful, and several pieces speak directly to important matters matters of general concern, such as abortion and positive discrimination. Thomson`s use of examples is particularly striking. They are starkly presented, and notably unsentimental. Some may find the tone heartless. That effect is not unintentional, and the very bare and the very bare and unapologetic presentation is designed to shock the reader into reflection. Her work reaches towards morally adventurous conclusions, and is impatient of many received pieties."

The growing globalisation of medical research and the application of new biotechnologies in morally contested areas has forced a revision of international ethical guidelines.
This book examines the controversies surrounding biomedical research in the 21st century from a human rights perspective, analysing the evolution and changes in form and content of international instruments regulating the conduct of biomedical research.
The approach adopted is comparative and includes an evaluation of human rights and UK and US law on embryonic stem cell research, the HIV/AIDS trials in the developing world, the Alder Hey Inquiry, and the human radiation and nerve gas experiments on human subjects in the US and the UK. This is the first book to analyse some of the major issues in biomedical research today from an international, comparative human rights perspective. 'Controversy about medical research is rarely out of the news. This book covers the law and ethics touching on a broad range of different kinds of research, from embryo research to research on the dead, and offers a comparative and multinational insight into the regulation of medical and scientific advances. Health professionals, lawyers, ethicists and, indeed, research subjects will learn a great deal from this work.'
Professor Margaret Brazier, University of Manchester
